U.S. Marine Corp base successfully trials biometrics and contactless for access control

By Andy Williams, Contributing Editor The biometric-enabled contactless card is getting another boost from the successful trial at the Quantico Marine Corps base, where a system merging the new with the old has been underway since last year. SPAWAR (Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Charleston, VA) is the technical support agency for the Marine Corps. The group wanted to test a system that would work with legacy readers and cards (mag stripe with PIN number), while providing physical access control via a new contactless card loaded with the cardholder’s fingerprint, said SPAWAR’s project engineer, Larry Barfield.

Asda supermarket trials contactless payments

Asda Stores Ltd., a British supermarket chain, is planning to trial contactless payment technology in 25 of its stores, according to Computerworld UK.

The contactless systems will be supplied by both Visa and payment value chain Streamline. Customers will be to simply tap the reader with their contactless-enabled card to pay for goods up to £15, rising to £20 June 1, potentially reducing queue times.
