Sagem Défense Sécurité wins contract for delivery of ID cards in Bahia State, Brazil

Sagem Défense Sécurité, a European defense and security electronics company, has been chosen to supply the 13.1 million residents of the State of Bahia in Brazil a single ID card that will include digital fingerprints. The company already has biometric ID systems running in 55 other countries.


PARIS –The State of Bahia (Brazil) has awarded a major contract to Sagem Défense Sécurité (SAFRAN Group), including the supply of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to ensure the secure delivery of identification cards.

This system will guarantee that each of the 13.1 million inhabitants in Bahia will be issued a single ID card.

When inhabitants request an ID card, digital fingerprints will be taken, in addition to the usual data, using 120 fingerprint acquisition stations at 32 centers across the State of Bahia. In addition, Sagem Défense Sécurité will set up a facility to digitize paper documents.

The system’s capacity will be gradually expanded, with the eventual target of handling 4,000 data acquisition and search operations per day.

GD Burti, the Brazilian subsidiary of Giesecke & Devrient, has met the security requirements to issue Brazilian eID cards.

The high-security Registry of Civil Identity cards have been granted certification by Instituto Nacional de Tecnologia da Informação, Brazil’s IT authority. GD Burti has delivered more than one million cards as part of an initial pilot project. RIC cards store biometric data and will make it easier for Brazilian nationals to visit other Mercosur treaty states.
