A new generation of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC), the most prevalent identity smart card in the U.S., is about to hit the market. Just how many CACs have been issued since its inception in 2001? To put it in perspective, enough to provide one to each of the State of Michigan’s 10.1 million residents.

With the Oct. 27 deadline for federal agencies to have their IDs comply with a presidential mandate to issue secure and interoperable federal credentials (HSPD-12/FIPS 201), the DoD is set to roll out its most ambitious card yet.

Dutch Ministry of Defense opts for Identive security

The Dutch Ministry of Defense (MoD) has chosen Identive’s SmartFold smart card readers to provide secure remote network access for its employees.

The agency has a lot of restricted and sensitive data that has particular management requirements. The MoD felt that the Identive contact smart card reader would provide the desired level of security, yet be flexible enough to incorporate into the existing network security infrastructure.

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has certified Good Technology’s secure Android OS-based platform (Secure Android), which enables the Global Information Grid to use Good’s Good for Government mobile device management and data loss prevention capabilities.

Malware attacks smart cards

A variant of malware called Sykipot is circulating that purportedly enables it to hijack U.S. Defense Department Common Access Cards and Windows smart cards, according to Alien Vault Labs. This variant, which appears to have been put together in March 2011, has been seen in dozens of attack samples from the past year.

DARPA working towards new internal biometric authentication systems

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is looking for proposals for research projects that could yield new biometric systems that authenticate users based on their own unique movements or behaviors such as the way they type or move a mouse, according to a ZDNet article.

New Bluetooth smart card reader released

Biometric Associates has released its baiMobile 3000MP Bluetooth Smart Card Reader, which is designed specifically for mobile platforms. It supports iOS 4.x for iPhone and iPad and Android OS 2.2 and higher, and it operates with Bluetooth version 2.1 and higher.
