Indian government to issue health insurance smart cards to poorest residents

The Indian government has begun issuing heath insurance smart cards to its poorest residents living below the poverty line. All existing diseases, hospitalization, surgery, and daycare services will be covered and accessed through the cards beginning in 2008. It is the responsibility of each state administration to administer the program and verify the eligibility of families with assistance from the federal government.
