For enterprise and government markets, networking companies are opting to converge and fine-tune access control applications

Depending on your frame of reference, the term “access” conjures thoughts of very different applications. Traditional building security or access control professionals think of physical access. The IT community thinks of logical access to computers, networks, and systems. But it’s actually the convergence of logical and physical access that presents the biggest opportunities and challenges to both enterprises and industry.

Convergence has been ‘the’ buzzword in security for several years now but it is rapidly moving from the chalkboard to the implementation list for cross-sector organizations. According to Forrester Research, spending on merging physical and logical access control in both the public and private sectors will increase to more than $7 billion in 2008.

Gemalto unveils health care IT solution

Gemalto announced the launch of ProtivaMedSecure, a solution package that addresses one of challenges facing health care providers: a secure digital identity.

Gemalto’s Protiva MedSecure provides a portfolio of authentication software, digital credentials, secure devices, servers and associated services. The Gemalto solution provides a single credential for secure visual identity, as well as physical and logical access to medical facilities and electronic medical records.

Identive releases access control readers

Identive Group Inc. introduced TouchSecure OpenAccess, a family of access readers that enable a range of organizations to upgrade and integrate their physical and logical access control systems quickly and cost-effectively while retaining existing proprietary physical access systems.

Gemalto reveals new logical access product

Gemalto will be demonstrating its strong authentication and one-time password (OTP) solutions and the introducing OTP login with Windows DirectAccess for remote and on-premise employees.

Codebench Inc. announced that Intercede, a provider of identity and credential management software, has integrated its MyID system with Codebench’s IDSync software development kit to make MyID compatible with more than 25 different physical access control systems. The addition of the IDSync SDK eliminates the need for Intercede to write its own interfaces for a range of physical access control systems.

NXP leads the contactless ticketing market, according to ABI Research

In ABI Research’s newest market study analysis, NXP Semiconductors has reportedly claimed the top spot in the contactless ticketing market with 74% of the market share.
