ImageWare Systems granted patent for Multimodal Biometric Platform

ImageWare has patented its Multimodal Biometric Platform which includes a system for enrolling, searching, matching, and managing biometric modalities on a common platform. It is Independent to the biometric types or the algorithms managed, the platform has been employed throughout the company’s line of biometric identity management solutions and marketed as the IWS™ Biometric Engine™.


SAN DIEGO–ImageWare® Systems, Inc., a leading developer of identity management solutions, today announced that it has been awarded patent number 7,298,873 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a multimodal biometric identification or authentication system.

This foundational patent covers a system and method for enrolling, searching, matching, and managing biometric modalities on a common platform, and is independent to the biometric types or the algorithms managed. The patent, titled “Multimodal Biometric Platform,” is employed throughout ImageWare’s portfolio of biometric identity management solutions and marketed as the IWS™ Biometric Engine™.

The IWS Biometric Engine is a multi-biometric identity management solution used by government and commercial enterprises to biometrically search and match populations of unlimited sizes for identity confirmation.

These include searching and matching for Verification of an Identity (1:1), Exhaustive Search for Identification (1:N), Watchlist Management (X:N) and Existing Biometric Population Management and Enhancement (N:N). IWS Biometric Engine employs a multi-biometric enrollment, management and authentication platform that is technology agnostic, enabling users to utilize biometric devices (over 120) and algorithms (over 90) from virtually any vendor, as well as support the combination of the following biometric types, including: single fingerprint, Livescan fingerprint, 2D face, 3D face, iris, palm scan, finger vein, palm vein, hand geometry, palm, DNA, signature, voice, and retina. Vision-Box, a biometrics solutions provider, has come out with an automatic border control e-gate that supports multimodal biometric authentication.

This new e-gate is a thin system that contains vb i-match, a single sourced design that is modular and flexible and can be adapted to business requirements and infrastructure constraints that would otherwise disrupt passenger flow. It has the ability to cope with industry standards such as ICAO. The e-gate supports iris, fingerprint and facial biometrics.

Multimodal biometric security provider ImageWare Systems Inc. has released version 2.0 of its Biometric Engine (BE) physical security identification product.

This product is designed for airports, seaports and other critical points-of-access for government and private enterprises. This update takes into account the SAFE Port Act, which requires foreign shippers to secure cargo being shipped to the U.S. and ensure the identity of those loading it. Shippers must manage this by 2013.
