US to see mobile barcodes more frequently

Friday, January 25, 2008 in News

Sprint is setting the pace for US wireless carriers by supporting 2D barcode scanning in 2008. The company is branding the service under two different but similar names: “Phone IQ” and “2-D Intelligence”.

At the time, the only thing holding back the acceptance of this new technology is the support among the carriers. 2D barcode scanning, or QR codes, is already wildly popular in Asia and starting to takeoff in Europe. Sprint is heading up the fight in the US and it will be interesting to see how the US market reacts.

Sprint has partnered with ScanLife Code Registry and Management platform which has been deployed successfully in France, Spain, the Philippines, China and the United States. Sprint’s website is very interesting and shows how the technology will fully work: http://www.sprintspecialoffers.com/phoneiq/[end]
