Rural Indian villagers can now pay for groceries with a smart card

Rural Indian villagers will soon be able to swipe smart cards for purchasing groceries in their neighborhoods. All that a shopkeeper has to do is to carry either a palmtop handheld recorder or a mobile phone-based device and once the person makes a purchase, the grocer can swipe the smart card and complete the transaction. This is part of the 14 additional services that the government intends to offer through smart cards, including pension payments and distribution of benefits.
