Australian ATMS upgraded to take ‘chip and pin’ smart cards

Cashcard Australia will overhaul or replace 6000 ATMs to make the network compliant with Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) technology. Starting this month, ITS will handle the $250 million national upgrade and will ensure the ATM network accepts new microchip cards now being issued by banks and credit card companies. ITS will replace the majority of existing Cashcard ATM models from multiple manufacturers with Wincor Nixdorf ATMs, the first ATM manufacturer to be officially accredited by the Australian Payments Clearing Association (APCA). [end] 

Hitachi partnered with Turkey-based banking company Isbank to bring biometric identification authentication to roughly 3,400 ATMs in Europe.

While the new network of biometric ATMs, which utilize Hitachi’s finger vein scanning technology, is the largest in Europe, it is far from the largest worldwide where Japan has embraced the technology and installed more than 75,000 finger vein-based ATMs.

Although Visa Inc. has created an incentive plan to get merchants and acquirers to accept EMV chip cards by a certain deadline, ATM makers will also soon have to get into the chip card game and build machines that accept EMV cards, reports the American Banker.

Visa has announced that more than 1 million EMV chip-enabled cards have been issued by U.S. financial institutions as of December 31, 2011.

Just 18 months ago there were no Visa-branded EMV chip cards issued in the U.S. according to Visa’s Stephanie Ericksen, who attributes the sudden growth to U.S. issuers accepting Visa’s EMV and mobile payments road map.

Boston-based Revosys has announced that it will implement NFC payment processing in its upcoming “Interactive V5 In-Taxi” advertising system.

According to Revosys, the upgraded Interactive V5 will allow passengers to pay for fares with NFC-enabled mobile phones, contactless credit and debit cards, and traditional magnetic stripe cards.
