Wafer-thin display card incorporates a one-time passcode and PKI chip

Innovative Card Technologies, developer of the ICT DisplayCard for e-banking, e-commerce and data access authentication, and ActivIdentity, a provider of identity assurance solutions, recently launched the Smart DisplayCard. Smart DisplayCard is the first product to incorporate a one-time passcode display and a PKI chip into a wafer-thin card format, according to the companies.


Developed and supplied by Innovative Card Technologies, the ICT DisplayCard integrates the security of a one-time passcode token directly into a card the size of a standard payment card. At the push of a button on the card, a one-time passcode is shown on the card’s integrated display. During an online transaction, this number is entered into a user interface with other information such as the user’s login name and static PIN for multifactor authentication. The addition of a chip on the Smart DisplayCard enables PKI login, email encryption and digital signature capabilities, and is fully integrated with the ActivIdentity Software portfolio.

Smart DisplayCards are currently available to the ActivIdentity global customer base and the company’s more than 15 million end users worldwide. The Smart DisplayCards can secure a wide range of financial institution customer transactions (login and transfers) at multiple points of access (online, ATM, or by phone). For enterprises, the Smart DisplayCards provide a complete, strong authentication solution for Windows login, remote access, single sign-on and secure email/transactions. The device and all credential management are driven through the ActivID Card Management System.

NagraID demonstrated its latest line of display cards at this year’s ShowStoppers@CES exhibition at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel.

These display cards enable cardholders to use one device for payment, physical access, online account security and transactions for card not present environments. The credit card-sized display cards contain an integrated LCD for displaying single-use passwords, personalized messages and other critical information.

Visa has announced that more than 1 million EMV chip-enabled cards have been issued by U.S. financial institutions as of December 31, 2011.

Just 18 months ago there were no Visa-branded EMV chip cards issued in the U.S. according to Visa’s Stephanie Ericksen, who attributes the sudden growth to U.S. issuers accepting Visa’s EMV and mobile payments road map.

NagraID has been in the payment card space for more than five years producing display cards that consumers can use for an extra layer of security when making purchases, says Don Malloy, business development manager at the company. The cards, which can be EMV enabled, have a display that shows a one-time passcode that can be used when making purchases.

In an effort to increase the security of the current EMV chip and PIN, SmartMetric has created an EMV card enhanced with biometrics.

The SmartMetric Chip & Biometric EMV Card incorporates fingerprints to activate the card. It’s designed to increase the security of standard EMV chip and PIN cards, which SmartMetric claims are still vulnerable to fraud attacks, even though they are safer than a magnetic stripe card.

STMicroelectronics developed a new RF testing method that uses electromagnetic waves instead of contact probes to remotely evaluate wafers equipped with RFID ICs.

According to ST, this “contactless” approach results in higher yields, shorter testing times and lower product cost. In addition, contactless testing allows RF circuits to be tested under conditions that are close to the real application conditions.
