G&D unveils new USB security tokens

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Giesecke & Devrient will be presenting a new generation of USB security tokens at the RSA conference in San Francisco next week. All data and applications can be stored together with the user’s digital identity on the StarSign Mobility Token, which features a MicroSD card and embedded smart card technology.

The token can be used without driver software or administrator rights, and leaves zero footprint on the computer after the work session. It enables corporate IT departments to retain control over proprietary applications and data, even in networks involving more than one company.

An off-the-shelf MicroSD card stores all data and applications, either encrypted or openly. A separate smart card plug-in in SIM card format, which is installed in a second slot in the mobility token, handles the secure administration of keys. Software applications can be executed from the token and automatically launched. The token ensures secure authentication of PC users and enables them to encrypt their data and to sign documents.

As the first showcase on the conference, G&D presents a hardened browser launched from the StarSign Mobility Token, including a RSA Security one-time password authentication mechanism.

The StarSign Mobility Token can be used for storing data and applications such as hardened browsers, mail clients and other office and driver software. Applications can be launched directly from the token when plugged into any computer. In addition, the StarSign Mobility Token can provide secure access to virtual private networks, online portals and to online banking. Further possible applications include using the token for Single Sign-On procedures that provide users with access to a mulitple IT applications once they log into their corporate network, or in the processing of digital signatures. [end]

The Smart Card Alliance Transportation Council has published a white paper examining how the transit industry can best make use of NFC technology.

“One of the major challenges facing transit agencies today is how to capitalize on the ever-growing popularity of mobile phones with a solid mobile strategy,” said Transportation Council Chairman Craig Roberts. “This white paper builds on the knowledge base developed in earlier white papers to foster a greater understanding of NFC technology, explain its role in the transit industry, and shed light on key issues facing the transit industry in developing a mobile strategy.”
