UK awards ID contract

The UK Identity and Passport service awarded its identity card contract to Computer Sciences Corporation, EDS, Fujitsu, IBM and Thales, according to Reuters UK. Overall the UK is expected to spend 4.7 billion pounds on the identity card scheme over the next 10 years.

The firms will now bid on a series of tenders, including a 10 million pound system over three years to issue credentials to 200,000 airport workers. The companies will also bid to replace Britain’s existing passport application and enrollment system, now run by Siemens; a database to store photographs and fingerprints; and a card production system. These three contracts are estimated to be worth around 500 million pounds over the next 10 years.
