Consumers use smart cards to monitor power consumption

The Salt River Project in Arizona enables users to use a monitoring device and smart card to pay for their electricity. The M-Power program won an award from the Washington, D.C.-based National Energy Resource Organization, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

Salt River Project won an award Tuesday for its M-Power program that allows users to closely monitor their power use. The program enables users to install a device that reads smart cards. Money is placed on the card and then swiped in the devices as energy is consumed. The program has been around since 2000.

SRP has about 50,000 customers on the program, and the company estimates it reduces household energy consumption on average by about 12%.
