Gemalto demonstrates instant secure connectivity to e-government services

Friday, October 24, 2008 in News

French digital security provider Gemalto announced it has become the first company to successfully demonstrate a solution that allows citizens to instantly connect to e-services using e-ID smart cards. The Coesys eGovernment Authentication Solution requires no software installation on the citizen’s computer, therefore simplifying the roll out of value added secure services. It also runs from any browser and any operating system, allowing plug-and-play connectivity from any PC.

With Coesys, which will also be demonstrated during CARTES and IDentification Nov. 4-6 in Paris, Gemalto is spearheading the citizen-centric approach that major countries across the world are now developing, also described as e-Government 2.0. It offers enhanced security by enabling end-to-end transport of user-credentials and attributes. By cutting out the need for client middleware, it represents a significant shift in smart card-based service delivery over the web.

The core technology inside Coesys eGovernment Authentication Solution is Gemalto’s SConnect. Providing smart card neutral connectivity, it won the “Best Software” Sesame award in 2007. Together with enabling conventional smart card applications, such as strong authentication, secure credential storage and access, and digital signatures, Coesys eGovernment Authentication Solution paves the way for the new range of digital identity applications that are served over the Web.

“A new model of smart online services is appearing in a number of e-government schemes,” said Frédéric Trojani, senior vice president of the Government Programs Solutions Group at Gemalto. “We are proud to demonstrate our capacity to make these e-services more convenient and accessible to citizens, more secure and more user-oriented than ever.”

To date, Gemalto has implemented online authentication solutions for e-health and e-ID programs in more than ten countries, including Algeria, Azerbaijan, Finland, France, Portugal, Qatar, Slovenia, Sweden, UAE and UK. [end]
