Coast Guard taps Datastrip for biometric solution

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

The United States Coast Guard has chosen Datastrip, a developer of mobile biometric tools, to supply them with as many as 300 handheld authentication devices as part of a $300 million contract to get the Coast Guard compliant with the Transportation Security Administration’s Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program, according to a TMC Net article. The device that Datastrip will be supplying is its DSV2+ TURBO handheld biometric terminals.

Also involved in the contract is Codebench, whose software TWICCheck and PIVCheck, will be incorporated into the new systems so that U.S. Coast Guardsmen are able to check for identities of employees via TWIC cards and a biometric sample at ports of entry. The DSV2+ TURBO was chosen partly due to its resistance to extreme weather and long battery life.
