Vermont senator pushing smart cards for health care

Vermont Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin wants smart cards to be used to track health care costs, he told the Burlington Free Press.

David Gruppo, an IBM researcher, last week provided lawmakers with background on how smart cards might be used to streamline medical bill collection.


Legislative leaders, the administration and the non-profit Vermont Information Technology Leaders are working together to craft an application for federal economic stimulus dollars to bring more technology to health care.

Shumlin wants to make sure doctors, insurers, experts in information technology and policymakers are working toward the same end on the project.
