Friday, May 1, 2009 in News

The Smart Card Alliance and Secure ID Coalition have scheduled a briefing for May 19 to discuss security and privacy in health care. The discussion will cover health care information privacy, identity management, access and authentication.

The U.S. government is poised to spend $19 billion on health care IT as part of The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This event will include a group of health care leaders, public policy makers and policy organizations for an interactive panel discussion addressing the security and privacy concerns of health information.

The panel will include discussions of the current problems with health care identity management, security and privacy, and propose solutions that include leveraging existing federal standards and technologies already used in other government identity programs.

Co-hosted by the Smart Card Alliance, a non-profit public/private organization whose members include health care providers, government users and technology providers, and the Secure ID Coalition whose mission is to promote the understanding and appropriate use of smart card technology to achieve enhanced security while maintaining user privacy.

Confirmed Speakers:

  • Dr. William Yasnoff, MD, PhD, chair, Health Record Banking Alliance; Managing Partner, NHII Advisors
  • Lisa Gallagher, senior director, privacy and security, HIMSS
  • Paul Contino, vice president, Information Technology, Mt. Sinai Medical Center
  • Co-moderators: Randy Vanderhoof, executive director, the Smart Card Alliance; Kelli Emerick, executive director, Secure ID Coalition

The meeting will take place May 19 from 9:30 - 11:00 am at the National Press Club, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor. [end]
