LaserCard Corp., which is already providing ID cards for Italy’s government, has now been awarded an $800,000 contract to supply its optical memory cards to the Carabinieri, the Italian national police force. The cards will be issued to all uniformed and civilian employees of the agency and will store personal data including employment, biometric identification and health information.

LaserCard, Mountain View, Calif., has custom-designed a card structure that integrates multiple technologies including an optical stripe, covert and overt security features and a contactless chip and antenna. The card design also ensures that Italy’s national printer, Poligrafico, can add a contact chip to enable access to e-government services.

Intesa Sanpaolo launches NFC payments pilot in Italy

Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest financial institution, has begun a commercial trial of SIM-based NFC mobile payments, reports NFC World.

The service, dubbed “Move and Pay,” is being tested among 600 Intesa Sanpaolo employees and customers in Milan and Turin, as well as by two academic institutions: The Polytechnic Institute of Milan and Turin ISMB.

Fake Harvard student discovered by campus police

A 27-year-old man posing as a Harvard undergraduate student stayed in the dorms, ate in the school cafeteria and chatted with many Harvard students via Facebook before being found out by campus police. He was cited for trespassing and using a false identification card.

UGA police investigating fake ID operations

Just as the University of Georgia police were ending an investigation into a sophisticated fake ID ring, another student dealing in fake driver licenses came to light. The original ring, apparently run by students at the University of Georgia and Gainesville State College, had distributed more than 1,000 fake IDs to students at the two schools.

Pair using forged student IDs to obtain U-passes deported

A Chinese couple who used stolen identity information from students at Simon Fraser University in Canada to obtain TransLink U-Passes, have been deported.

Siyuan Gu and Jing Wang pleaded guilty in December to using the forged documents.

Corporate Art Force applies RFID on all artwork placed at clients sites

Corporate Art Force, a provider of art procurement services, announced it will be applying RFID tags on all artwork placed at client sites. The company’s portfolio includes over 13,000 pieces of artwork at more than 100 client sites in 40 different states.
