Entrust supplying EAC to Slovakia

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Entrust Inc. announced that it has deployed second-generation e-passport architecture, also known as Extended Access Control (EAC), for the Slovak Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Entrust EAC e-passport solution in Slovak Republic is deployed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facility in the country’s capital of Bratislava, as well as 72 consular posts around the world. In detail, Entrust implemented a Document Verifying Certification Authority and the accompanying inspection station concentrator, which enables Slovakian citizens living abroad to visualize or inspect obtained EAC e-passports.

Countries are in the process of evolving their e-passport programs to a second-generation framework that includes capabilities for EAC. EU member countries were required to add fingerprint data to MRTDs with the biometric information protected through the EAC scheme by June 2009.

“Required by the EU, this latest generation of e-passports provides enhanced security and authentication capabilities for today’s machine-readable travel documents (MRTD),” said Tomas Babjak, project manager for EAC project implementation from the Department of Security and Information Processing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic. “EAC e-passports improve security at border checkpoints and provide additional assurances for the safety of our citizens.” [end]

Eighteen months after its introduction, 31 countries have recognized the INTERPOL Global Smart eID & eVisa multipurpose, smart card credential.

The INTERPOL Global Smart eID & eVisa is a travel document secured by PKI technology that provides enterprise smart card capabilities for logical and physical access to INTERPOL facilities and networks. As a travel document, the card supports both Basic Access Control and Extended Access Control e-passport standards. It also is the basis for special visa status from granting member countries, allowing for secure enterprise access and speedier border crossings.
