In order to better secure online identities, Washington State is going to pilot a contactless smart card driver licenses, says John Biccum, a security strategist at Microsoft. Biccum made the comments during the Interagency Advisory Board in Washington DC.

Biccum was presenting at the meeting on securing consumer identity online. He had met with officials from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators about issuing ID cards that could be used for securing identity online. States have been hesitant because of financial constraints and the added complexity but Washington State is in the process of planning a pilot.

The card will use a PIV-type of standard and will have level three assurance. Other details of the project were not immediately available. Plans for electronic IDs are going to be discussed at the NASCIO meeting in Baltimore, April 28-30.

Russian government delays universal card project

Russia has pushed back the launch of its universal eID card to January 2013, reports The Moscow Times.

Originally scheduled to roll out this month, the card is supposed to function as an electronic ID, driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, ATM card and immigration document, along with other possible features.

UGA police investigating fake ID operations

Just as the University of Georgia police were ending an investigation into a sophisticated fake ID ring, another student dealing in fake driver licenses came to light. The original ring, apparently run by students at the University of Georgia and Gainesville State College, had distributed more than 1,000 fake IDs to students at the two schools.

Québec taps Datacard

Datacard Group announced a contract award from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) to upgrade to the Datacard MXD Card Delivery System and MXi Envelope Insertion System for enhanced card delivery and mailing for its driver licenses and identification cards.

British Columbia moves forward on CareCard upgrade

British Columbia is moving forward with plans to upgrade its CareCard program. According to The Vancouver Sun, the new card will provide access to a variety of regional services including electronic health records, driver license and school registration for children.
