Washington State planning to pilot smart card driver licenses

Thursday, April 1, 2010

In order to better secure online identities, Washington State is going to pilot a contactless smart card driver licenses, says John Biccum, a security strategist at Microsoft. Biccum made the comments during the Interagency Advisory Board in Washington DC.

Biccum was presenting at the meeting on securing consumer identity online. He had met with officials from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators about issuing ID cards that could be used for securing identity online. States have been hesitant because of financial constraints and the added complexity but Washington State is in the process of planning a pilot.

The card will use a PIV-type of standard and will have level three assurance. Other details of the project were not immediately available. Plans for electronic IDs are going to be discussed at the NASCIO meeting in Baltimore, April 28-30. [end]

Originally scheduled to roll out this month, the card is supposed to function as an electronic ID, driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, ATM card and immigration document, along with other possible features.
