The Smart Card Alliance Health care Council announced a webinar reviewing the growing threat of medical identity theft and the policies and technology solutions that can address it.
Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, explains “For this webinar, the Alliance is bringing together experts in the field to discuss the serious problem of medical identity theft, and why securing our medical identities is critical as health care becomes increasingly digital and information is exchanged over networks.”
Medical identity theft is a costly problem for U.S. citizens, says SCAHC. A recent Ponemon Institute study found that nearly 1.5 million Americans have been victims of medical identity theft with an estimated total cost of $28.6 billion – or approximately $20,000 per victim.
To build more awareness of this issue, the webinar will bring together speakers Paul Contino, vice president of information technology, Mount Sinai Medical Center; Deven McGraw, director of health privacy project, Center for Democracy and Technology; Larry Ponemon, Ph.D., chairman and founder, Ponemon Institute; and Randy Vanderhoof, executive director, Smart Card Alliance.
Panel discussion topics will include:
- The scope of medical identity theft in the United States.
- The impact that electronic health records and health information exchanges have on privacy and personal health care information.
- Consumer attitudes toward medical identity theft and healthcare information privacy.
- Opportunities in the current electronic health record adoption process to address medical identity theft with policies and technical standards.
- Impact of medical identity theft on health care providers
- Approaches taken to protect patient health records.
