Monday, May 24, 2010

VeriSign identity and authentication services have been purchased by security software provider Symantec. The deal is set at $1.28 billion cash for all VeriSign ID assets including VeriSign’s Secure Sockets Layer certificate services, Public Key Infrastructure services, and the VeriSign Identity Protection authentication and trust businesses, as well as a majority stake in the firm’s Japanese business.

Symantec sought out VeriSign as an authentication solution to develop its vision to provide individuals security on the Internet.

By acquiring the VeriSign product line Symantec can now provide software with security to nearly anything in any location. [end]

Experian and Symantec’s jointly developed two-factor credentialing system has received National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication SP 800-63-1 Level 3 Assurance.

The General Services Administration (GSA) Division of Identity Management evaluated the tool to determine its soundness and feasibility in accordance with the Special Publication’s electronic authentication guidelines. This formal review was mandated by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Interim Final Rule on Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances, which requires prescribers to obtain two-factor identity credentials from a GSA-approved provider.
