Entrust upgrades e-passport inspection system

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

Entrust Inc. has added to its managed border solution to provide governments an method for inspecting today’s advanced electronic machine-readable travel documents (eMRTD).

A component of Entrust Credentialing Services, the new offering is designed to simplify the architecture associated with validating eMRTDs. It enables border security agencies to download revocation information from the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) public key directory (PKD); establish integration with domestic no-fly lists; and secure the transmission of validation material.

Based on Entrust’s hosted public key infrastructure technology (PKI), Entrust provides governments the ability to read and verify first- and second-generation electronic travel documents. The managed solution is deployed as a cloud-based service.

Participating in ICAO’s PKD is importantly to verify the authenticity of e-passports from other countries. And, conversely, other countries can help identify fraudulent e-passports being issued in another country’s name. To ensure the secure exchange of the documents and certificates, Entrust also encrypts all transmissions.

Entrust e-passport solutions have been deployed in 15 countries. Entrust solutions are also used by more than 35 countries and 60 U.S. federal agencies. [end]

But the documents were delayed due to complexities with the operation of the project and the need to thoroughly research and analyze other countries’ experiences with biometric passports.
