Association wants trusted traveler program

Friday, March 18, 2011

The U.S. Travel Association issued a report asking Congress to approve a national trusted traveler program. The group’s recommendation focus on streamlining security checkpoints at airports.

The association did research which shows that travelers are avoiding two to three trips per year due to unnecessary hassles associated with the security screening process.

Recommendation around trusted traveler include:

  • Congress should authorize TSA to implement a new, voluntary, government-run trusted traveler program that utilizes a risk-based approach to checkpoint screening, with the goal of refocusing resources on the highest risk passengers.

  • The U.S. Department of Homeland Security should expand access to international trusted traveler programs for international passengers entering the U.S., as well as lead efforts to establish a multinational network of streamlined entry procedures for low-risk travelers.

There are currently two privately-run registered traveler programs operating. But the programs suffered a setback when the largest operator, CLEAR, shut down in 2009. Alclear is the company that took over for CLEAR but it has yet to rollout at more than a couple of airports. [end]
