Smart cards key to eliminating ID theft and billions in fraud
Identity theft is common in the banking world and online, but now it is also lurking where Americans are told to feel the most protected–hospitals. The frightening reality is that there is little to no identity management, much less protection, in our health care system today.
Because of this, health care fraud and identity theft are growing at an alarming rate and becoming very well organized. I have run into what may likely already be a recognized risk to patient data. Doctors or dentists who do not maintain a secure computer system for their patient's data. The case I am thinking of, the dentist maintains one computer with both personal, professional, and patient data.
When signing up for linkedin.com, they submitted ALL their patient's email addresses and now linkedin is contacting them, has access to the data on the dentist's computer as it is not protected.
I do not know what to do next, but I feel very exposed. Were the data segregated, this could not have occurred. The dentist admits not taking the time to understand linkedin before accessing it in any fashion.
