High security smart card project funded

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research has funded a 1.3 million euro next-generation, high-security smart card project, reports Security Document World

The project is a collaboration between Bundesdruckerei and Fraunhofer Research Institution for Applied and Integrated Security (AISEC) and is being spearheaded by NXP Semiconductors Germany. Scheduled to take place over the next two years, the Uncloneable Material Based Security Architecture (UMABASA) plans to develop a smart card protection design that will protect cards against attacks that aren’t even possible today.

The Bundesdruckerei believes the added protection will come from irreversibly merging the card’s microchip with both the information stored on it and the card body. The link between these three will be a physically uncloneable option that generates cryptographic keys.

The researchers on the project plan to design the functions needed to create this link as well as figure out the best materials and production process for this type of card.
