Identive provides more smart card readers for Spanish electronic ID program

Identive Group has shipped an additional 122,000 smart card readers to support Spain’s national electronic ID card program which the government launched in 2009. More than half of Spain’s 46 million citizens now carry the ID cards.

By providing the card readers free of charge, the Spanish government aims to encourage individuals and businesses to use the secure ID program to access government, banking and administration applications, as well as to digitally sign documents.


Identive received this most recent order from Red.es, an entity within the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

According to Identive, the solution integrates the PLAID government-grade access authentication protocol with the secure processor within an NFC-enabled smart phone. When used with Identive’s new line of TouchSecure readers, the NFC phone can be used in place of traditional physical access credentials, such as smart cards, to quickly and easily enter secure areas.

Identive Group announced tomPAY, an NFC-enabled sticker tag that can be affixed to existing mobile phones to enable contactless payments.

Based on Identive’s tom (tag on metal) smart inlay technology, tomPAY is manufactured using the same processes as an ISO PVC card. When placed on a phone, tomPAY enables contactless mobile payments in compliance with MasterCard PayPass specifications, as well as loyalty, transport ticketing and other m-commerce services.

The Dutch Ministry of Defense (MoD) has chosen Identive’s SmartFold smart card readers to provide secure remote network access for its employees.

The agency has a lot of restricted and sensitive data that has particular management requirements. The MoD felt that the Identive contact smart card reader would provide the desired level of security, yet be flexible enough to incorporate into the existing network security infrastructure.
