Report: Mobile biometrics to $161M by 2015

Goode Intelligence revealed in its new report, Mobile Phone Biometric Security Analysis and Forecasts 2011-2015, that mobile phone biometric security products and services generated just over $30 million in 2011 and that the market will grow to over $161 million in revenue by 2015.

“We believe a biometric groundswell is building for smart mobile devices. The market is currently slow but pressure is growing,” says Alan Goode, author of the report and founder of Goode Intelligence.

According to Goode Intelligence, the prediction of growth in excess of $130 million over the next four years is due to three key factors:


  • Smart Mobile Devices are now the personal device of choice, with sales outpacing PCs. The “bring your own device” trend is accelerating the need for enhanced security as mobile devices are being used more often for consumer and business-sensitive activities including: storing sensitive data and connecting to network-services that enable access to private and business-critical information.

  • Mobile devices are set to become the prime portal for our private and business lives but individuals are still relying on last-century technology to: protect devices and provide authentication and identity verification services for apps and network-based services.

  • An opportunity to leverage the unique technological characteristics of mobile devices for biometric security, examples of these opportunities include device protection.

    Research shows that the current measures to protect our devices, for example, PINs and pattern-based identification, are not adequate. Next generation identification and authentication technology will supports mobile users and not rely on special hardware, such as tokens and smart cards.

    Specialized biometric capture and verification equipment that is used in the field by law enforcement, government and military user will be replaced by technology embedded in the mobile. Lastly, the ability to augment identity verification solutions to support NFC, including mobile payments at the point of sale are coming as well.

Goode says there is building pressure for biometrics in mobile devices. Google’s face unlock solution for Android 4.0 is already deployed on some handsets. There are also rumors that Google will support voice recognition for Android.

Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) plans to implement a mobile biometric screening device system to help its inland enforcement operations combat illegal immigrants.

As reported in the Straits Times and Today Online, the ICA is investing in MAVIS, the Mobile Automated Verification and Identification System. The handheld system can perform ID and fingerprint and facial recognition biometrics screening without having to bring a suspect into an office.

DigitalPersona Inc. released a new version of its DigitalPersona Pro Enterprise software that includes facial recognition as a method for authentication.

Facial recognition can now be combined with fingerprint biometrics, passwords, PINs, proximity cards, smart cards and OATH tokens for a multi-factor authentication solution. Policy creation and enforcement works through a client’s existing Active Directory infrastructure.
