The Halton Borough Council is moving forward and expanding a waste elimination scheme that provides incentives for those who recycle, using RFID tagged recycle bins.
The expansion comes following a six-month pilot across 10,000 households. Following the results, which showed higher recycling rates, an additional 37,000 homes will soon have the option of participating in the program.
The RFID-enables program, organized by RecycleBank, is to be rolled out across the borough, according to a Runcorn & Widnes Weekly News report. Weight of the individual bins is monitored at the point of collection and the tag is read to credit the bin, enabling accurate tracking of the recycling efforts of each household.
Points are then awarded based on the weight of recycled products. These points can can be redeemed at local businesses for goods and services.
