Amazon to join mobile payments race?

Amazon’s Payments unit is looking to launch a mobile payments service using NFC technology, two anonymous sources close to the project told Bloomberg.
Amazon has been steadily investing in mobile the past couple years, introducing a service in 2009 that lets users pay for goods on Amazon via mobile phone, and, earlier this week, a music streaming service for Android phones. The company, which recently debuted the Amazon Appstore for Android, may join the ranks of Google, Apple and Isis if it chooses to pursue NFC payments.
In addition to point-of-sale mobile payments, Amazon wants to offer marketing services with its NFC platform. For example, a user could tap a tagged item with an NFC phone to instantly compare prices on Amazon, or find a different size or design.
According to one of the sources, Amazon will decide if it will go ahead with the project in three to five months.
