Delhi rickshaw pullers may get biometric badges for regulation

Rickshaw pullers in Delhi, India may be issued biometric badges following traffic safety courses in an effort to not have to ban the profession altogether, according to a Calcutta News article. The Delhi government brought the proposal of the biometric badges to the city’s High Court citing that such a program would allow for the checking of credentials and authorizations would be eased as the program also outlines the issuance of biometric readers to the city’s traffic police.
The new efforts by the Delhi government come off of recent proclamations stemming from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) stating that rickshaw pullers could not be allowed on arterial roads in the city due to safety issues. However, as many felt this was a slight to rickshaw pullers and violated their rights, they have developed a program to answer the problems cited by the MCD.
