French supermarket chain Casino is working on a new system that uses NFC tags to give the visually impaired and disabled access to product information like pricing and ingredients.
According to NFC World, Groupe Casino is currently testing the technology at a special Casino mock-up alongside L’Institut de la Vision at Hopital des Quinze-Vingts in Paris. A commercial trial is slated for next year.
Casino’s tests involve NFC-enabled phones that can the user can tap against NFC tags to hear the name of the corresponding product, its price and contents. The technology for the study has been provided by Think&Go NFC.
Along with NFC, the lab is also testing tablet PCs, such as the Apple iPad, to help shoppers find the products they need on their shopping lists and improve the online shopping experience.
