New Zealand’s Upper Hutt City Central Library is planning the installation of RFID self-check technology, allowing users to self-check in and out their items, according to the Wellington Scoop.
A microchip embedded into every item in the library’s collection will enable users to self-check in and out their items and also pay any outstanding fines or charges. The RFID-enabled self-check machines will operate in eleven languages, and increase the accessibility of library services.
The new system will also enable library staff to locate incorrectly shelved items by waving a scanning device along a shelf at a measured pace.
