The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has recently implemented an RFID system for tracking its IT assets using Confidex’s Steelwave Micro RFID tags, inLogic’s RFTrack.NET asset tracking software and Motorola hand held RFID readers.
State regulations require NYSERDA to physically take stock of their IT equipment at least once a year. With the number of IT assets continuing to increase, the current manual inventory process became more and more time consuming. Not only was it difficult to complete audits in a timely matter, it was also preventing employees from being able to focus on more important job responsibilities.
To alleviate the situation, NYSERDA looked to RFID to automate, and thus expedite, the auditing process. So far NYSERDA has been able to inventory half of their IT assets in a mere 3 days, instead of the 3 weeks it would have previously taken.
Additionally, inLogic’s RFTrack.NET also allows them to scan existing bar codes and serial numbers, easing the agency’s transition to RFID.
