Pakistan’s 2.1 million federal government pensioners will now be able to their benefits loaded on a smart card, reports the Associated Press of Pakistan.
The Ministry of Finance and National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) are working together on this project to give retired federal workers, including army personnel, their benefits electronically.
Retired workers will be able to choose whether or not they would like to receive their pension through a bank or through the NADRA smart card.
The smart cards use On-Spot Biometric Verification and cost Rs 1500. The card costs are split by the Ministry and NADRA. Cards will be free to the pension recipients.
The program was implemented after a long demand from retirees who had problems withdrawing their funds every month, due to long lines, poor record keeping, and trouble getting to disbursement agencies during the proper time.
