ROAM Data has announced a new point of sale (POS) reader that can handle both traditional magnetic stripe cards and NFC-enabled contactless devices.
According to ROAM, the “NFC Swipe” reader can connect via audio jack to hundreds of different smart phones, tablets and PCs, turning them into secure state-of-the-art mobile POS devices.
The device will be compatible with both Visa payWave and MasterCard PayPass contactless specifications, as well as ROAM’s card acceptance applications ROAMpay X.
ROAM said it accelerated its R&D and product commercialization plans in the wake of last month’s major investment by Paris-based terminal maker Ingenico.
The NFC Swipe is slated for a full commercial release in mid-2012.
