With the influx of mobile device usage proliferating corporate networks and IT departments, Network World and SolarWinds teamed up to survey 400 IT professionals to understand the challenges of mobile device management and how corporations faced them.
While the majority of survey respondents work for companies that issue mobile devices to their employees, a little more than 15% don’t issue company-owned devices with network access. Some of these companies enable employees to BYOD, or bring-your-own-device, for work purposes.
The BYOD trend leaves room open for problems and issues, particularly when employees look to the IT department for support a wide variety of devices, including ones the IT department may not be familiar with. Anti-BYOD respondents also cited security as being another major reason to keep personal devices off of a corporate network.
Respondents who were pro-BYOD did often limit access to specific applications or networks. They also state that BYOD has increased productivity and employee satisfaction. However, these respondents also stated that managing so many different devices was a significant challenge for IT departments.
