Texas to take Medicaid smart card project statewide

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will begin a statewide smart card system for people to verify their Medicaid coverage. The new Medicaid card will look like a credit card and be encoded with eligibility and identity information required by doctors and other health-care providers. The cards will automate patient check-in and protect patient information because it requires biometrics. The system should be in place by late 2009 and in doing so Texas will become the first state to use smart card-based identity in its Medicaid program.
