CoreStreet Compatible with Datakey Smart Card Technology
Technology Enables Scalable, Active Security with Smart Cards
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 2, 2004–CoreStreet, a leading provider of authorization and validation technology, today announced the company’s technology is now compatible with Datakey’s industry leading smart cards. This compatibility enables CoreStreet customers to validate users’ identities easily and cost effectively when implementing both physical and digital security solutions.
“CoreStreet’s technology can be placed in nearly any type of device, including a smart card,” said Phil Libin, president of CoreStreet. “Being compatible with Datakey’s smart cards and desktop middleware enables users to implement new active security solutions broadly, using existing Datakey technology.”
CoreStreet enables companies to deploy scalable, ubiquitous security, at a fraction of the expense and response time typically required, enabling companies to be more active in their security plans. The key is in separating a person’s identity from their permissions. CoreStreet removes identity from the equation and uses Real Time Credentials–digitally signed proofs–embedded with information for validating and authorizing certain activities and access permissions.
These proofs can be transferred in preset intervals in any number of ways, including on a smart card. Since proofs do not contain critical identity information, they eliminate the need for a secure connection back to a central authority for every permission request. As a result, they can be inexpensively placed anywhere security is needed.
“CoreStreet’s technology is innovative in the security world,” said Tim Russell, president and CEO of Datakey. “Datakey smart cards are being used by over one million users today for logical and physical security. When used in conjunction with CoreStreet’s Real Time Credentials, organizations now have the ability to validate a user’s credentials quickly. For smart card programs with millions of users, the challenge is not just issuing a large volume of cards, but also knowing whether the credential being presented is, in fact, valid at the time of presentation. This capability is incredibly valuable in dealing with a class of users that is largely disconnected from any network.”
Datakey provides its solutions today to enterprise customers for various security applications including single sign-on, VPN authentication, Windows logon, secure email, digital signatures, digital certificates and password management. The company’s newest offering, Datakey Axis, is a smart card-based single sign-on solution that addresses the current password management problem and provides a foundation for introducing stronger authentication methods. End users deploying Datakey technology today include the US Department of State, the FDIC, the Canadian Department of National Defence, Wells Fargo, US Patent and Trademark Office, US General Services Administration and Rabobank (in the Netherlands).
