ID card industry executives explain benefits to DHS and lawmakers

Executives at laser and smart identification card companies are intensifying their push for alternative technologies for the Homeland Security Department’s upcoming requirements for Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) border crossing cards and Real ID drivers’ licenses. To avoid the expense and inconvenience associated with reading RFID tags currently planned for WHTI/Real ID cards, executives feel that laser cards provide a secure card with automatic biometric identification that permits easy visual identification and does not require a reader. Executives also urged DHS and Congress to put privacy and data security as the highest priorities in identification programs such as Real ID and the WHTI card.
