Sydney transportation smart card plan abandoned

Australian government officials have finally abandoned their plans for a Sydney smart transportation card due to problems with the outside contractor. A $10 million bond, held by the Government, was immediately seized from Perth-based ERG which had previously admitted to a three-year delay in the proposed delivery time of the project to 2010. The $300 million contract has been on life support for four years without ever coming to fruition. Estimates now put the delivery of an integrated ticket system for buses, trains and ferries – as has existed in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Rome, Singapore, San Francisco and other cities for years – at between five and 10 years.
