Students at Buffalo, NY’s Enterprise Charter School are using a new 13.56 MHz radio frequency identification (RFID) card for an array of campus services. The public school, with grades K-8, is using technology from Texas Instruments Radio Frequency Identification (TI-RFID™) Systems.
Secure assets such as laptops and library books are tagged with the company’s Smart Label technology. Smart Labels use technology that conforms to the ISO 15693 international standard for contactless technology. The same ISO 15693 technology is used in the ID badges carried by the institution’s 450 students and staff.
The systems integrator for the project, Buffalo-based Intuitek, maintained the existing campus security system but added the new contactless technology to expedite and add convenience to key campus administration processes.
A time and attendance application uses the cards and a series of kiosks to automate the process. Upon entering the facility, the student presents the ID near the Kiosk’s reader. The student’s photo appears on screen and the student touches the photo to verify the transaction. The data is sent to the master and also, in real-time, to teachers in their classrooms.
At entry points, staff members present the ID card to the access control reader to unlock the door. Students use the card to checkout library materials and soon will use it to authorize status in the cafeteria’s free and reduced lunch programs.
“The Enterprise Charter School is a great example of the benefits a more advanced RFID solution can provide in an educational setting,” said Kelly Stark, access control business unit manager, TI-RFid. “The growing demand to use a single card for multiple applications is driving the demand for a 13.56 MHz RFID solution in many venues, from schools and hospitals to public events and corporate facilities. We expect to see many industries reaping the benefits of this technology in the near future.”
