The Rural Development Department (RDD) of the Palakkad district of Kerala, India has announced that it will issue contactless smart cards to workers looking for jobs in the area, according to squidcard.com.
The cards, which will contain biometric fingerprint data of the holder, can be used to register for work, according to Sreekantan Nair, Deputy Development Commissioner of the Rural Development Department.
Officials hope that the new card system will make the allotment of work speedier and fairer.
Additionally, if a worker is not assigned work within 15 days of registration, he or she will become eligible for unemployment. The RDD will also use the cards to help distribute wages and weed out favoritism.
According to Nair, the cards will first be introduced in five states before being implemented across the entire region.
