India based Viraj Profiles, a global manufacturer of stainless steel profiles, has streamlined its logistical operations with RFID technology.
For implementation, Viraj chose Vicinity RFID Solutions, choosing UPM Raflatac ShortDipole ultra high frequency tags and Psion Teklogix ultra high frequency hand held Readers.
The large steel profiles were previously packed in heavy bundles weighing some half a ton each, and marked only with a hand-written code. This made finding the right bundles for each shipment difficult and time consuming.
To turn things around, Viraj Profiles first divided each of its locations into individually tagged zones, tagging each bundle with UPM Raflatac RFID tags printed with a serial number for visual identification.
For a quick inventory of whole warehouses, location tag data from each zone is combined with data from the bundle tags in that zone. The data is then stored on a server when the hand held readers are docked to a computer, minimizing the chance of human error and providing a 99% inventory visibility.
The entire process takes about an hour instead of the 12 hours it used to take before the RFID implementation.
