Apple’s new integrated SIM may be used for mobile payments

Apple is working with Gemalto to develop an integrated SIM card for its iPhone that could be used for mobile payments, according to gigaom.com.
The new built-in SIM, which would enable Apple to bypass mobile operators in offering service to its customers, seems to indicate Apple is finally ready to deliver an iPhone with a mobile wallet. As GIGaom points out, Gemalto is a major player in secure payments industry, and Apple has recently issued several patents hinting at future mobile payment apps.
Additionally, Apple has the credit card information of some 160 million customers through iTunes, giving them a leg up in harnessing the ‘potentially huge’ mobile payments market, says GIGaom.
