Card reader at New Mexico university turned off because of problems

A $200,000 security system that would enable students at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque to use their ID cards to gain entrance to their dorm rooms has been shelved for the time being because the system isn’t working as expected.
Instead, students at the school’s newest dorm have to resort back to the old days and keys.
The card-swiping system was installed in 2009, but because of several problems including software issues and ID card changes, school officials decided to turn the card readers off and keep issuing students keys.
A school spokesperson said this is just a temporary fix. This summer the school will start rolling out a campus-wide ID card reading system that will work at dorms and other school campuses.
