The Invercargill City Council announced it will equip its passenger transport buses with new electronic ticketing machines in the hope that it leads to the introduction a new smart transit card system, according to The Southland Times.
The council last year decided to investigate the installation of smart cards which could be used to pay for council services such as rates, bus fares and swimming pool visits. New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) suggested it, too, would like to see smart card introduced and the council asked taxpayers whether they supported the idea.
The Southland Regional Public Transport Plan 2012 – 2015 will enable a budget of $200,000 per year over the next six years for promotion and service branding, high quality signage and information, and smart cards.
Meanwhile, the council would be getting costs together for the smart card system which would be compatible with the Wayfarer system and GoCard used by Otago Regional Council, and recently introduced into Queenstown.
