Mobile fingerprint readers to surpass 1 billion shipments annually by 2021
The integration of biometric capabilities in smartphones and tablets is becoming more common for personal identification and authentication applications. A variety of biometric modalities will be utilized in mobile devices in the years ahead, including voice recognition, facial recognition and iris recognition. By far the most prevalent modality will be fingerprint recognition using onboard fingerprint readers, according to a recent report from Tractica.
The market research firm forecasts that shipments of onboard fingerprint readers in mobile devices will surpass 1 billion units annually by 2021, representing 34% of all smartphone and tablet shipments worldwide in that year. In some regions, the attach rates will be significantly higher – in North America, for example, which Tractica forecasts will be the leading region for fingerprint reader adoption, 51% of all mobile devices will include such sensors by 2021.
“Currently, the use cases for mobile fingerprint readers center on basic authentication for local device access and on-device purchase transactions,” says principal analyst Bob Lockhart. “As penetration rates increase in the future, however, the market will expand to include a variety of additional identification and authentication use cases for banking and financial transactions, government identification, and health care applications, among others.”
Tractica’s report, “Biometrics for Mobile Devices”, examines the market trends and technology issues surrounding the identification technology and mobile devices. Biometric modalities and applications are analyzed, and the report also includes detailed profiles of 25 industry players.
Market forecasts, which cover the period from 2015 through 2024, include mobile biometric hardware unit shipments, device pricing and revenue, software application licenses, application pricing, and application revenue.

Entrust Datacard updated CardWizard
Entrust Datacard announced the latest release of the Datacard CardWizard software version 6.3.
This release is the newest release of the company’s software that features new functionality and enhanced capabilities for financial institutions instantly issuing payment cards in-branch.
Building on the existing CardWizard software capabilities, this new 6.3 version streamlines in-branch card operations by offering two new significant enhancements, which include:

This functionality is designed to enable branch employees to retrieve card records from the issuer’s card management system and instantly issue them in-branch from the browser-based CardWizard client. In addition, branch reporting and card stock management features were also added in this software update.

With the ability to adapt to a variety of interfaces and card management systems, financial institutions can combine CardWizardsoftware 6.3 with an array of Entrust Datacard’s associated instant issuance hardware and PIN pad devices to create flexible card issuance environments, including programs that offer debit or credit cards, magstripe or smart cards, as well as self-service kiosk offerings.
San Jose eatery taps Crossmatch
Crossmatch, a provider of biometric identity management solutions, announced that its U.are.U 4500 fingerprint readers have been deployed by Togo’s Eateries Inc, a San Jose, Calif.-based fast casual sandwich chain, to increase security, improve accountability and reduce fraud at the Point-of-Sale.
The Crossmatch fingerprint readers enable instant, non-repudiable identity confirmation for employee sign in and transaction authorization. This distinctive level of accountability becomes the deterrent to fraud and theft.
Prior to biometrics, Togo’s POS system required employees to enter a password to sign in or authorize an override. However, management found it challenging to track access to the cash drawer because passwords can be shared. Today, more than 1,000 Togo’s employees use U.are.U 4500 USB fingerprint readers for simplified sign in. Fingerprint templates replace the need to enter a password, resulting in a unique and auditable identity for each transaction.
The Crossmatch fingerprint readers are performing well at all levels for this restaurant chain. Franchisees like it because it enables auditable POS terminal access, transaction logs and time clock functions. Additionally, Togo’s took advantage of the fact that their POS software was already enabled to support the Crossmatch U.are.U biometric fingerprint hardware enabling easy integration.
