SAN FRANCISCO–Oce announced that it has begun production of a new version of its successful Oce ID-Star 4054 passport reader incorporating the latest ePassport required security features. This 3rd generation reader, which scans passports, visas and other secure travel documents in color, ultraviolet light, infrared and security laminate, now includes the latest RFID advancements from Integrated Engineering, a world leading company which develops and manufactures contactless smart card solutions for verifying the authenticity of documents and detecting forgeries with the new ePassport Option. The Oce ID-Star 4054 ePR supports all new security requirements in the field of biometrics based on the latest ICAO standards and recommendations. Oce’s Document Technologies unit markets this solution worldwide.
The new Oce ID-Star 4054 ePassport Option adds the high speed RFID-reader module from Integrated Engineering’s state-of-the-art ICAO ISO 14443-AB reader in combination with a dual antenna. Regardless where the RFID chip is mounted in the passport, all necessary information can be read in one motion in one pass optically as well as electronically. This solution also allows the Oce ID-Star to read a shielded ePassport.
The high speed RFID-reading module is completely integrated with the Oce ID Star 4054 ePR and will be sold as an optional upgrade for the standard reader. It is designed to capture all biometrical information stored on a chip in the upcoming new generation of ePassports and other travel documents. The RFID module is integrated seamlessly into the Oce ID-Star ePR so that reading data from the chip in the ID document under inspection takes place in parallel with the capture of images from the personal-data page of the ID document. This means that the document only has to be laid on the reader once for both the optical and the electronic reading and data capture processes to be performed. The RFID read function thus does not impair the reader’s ergonomic ‘one motion usage’ in practice. The application also helps ascertain that the data of both the optical and the RFID readings originate from the same document.
More than 2,000 Oce ID-Star devices are in operation worldwide, deployed for mission critical projects in border control, airports, embassies, consulates and passport authorities. The Oce ID-Star is used to help manage border controls in over 15 countries including Argentina, Austria, Brunei, Denmark, Estonia, Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Turkey and Vietnam. It is also used for quality assurance of consulate issued documents in Hungary, Switzerland and the Ukraine.
