The city government of Melbourne, Australia, has adopted an RFID-enabled system to record the comings and goings of its fleet of employee-driven vehicles.
The project to automate the record-keeping system began in June of last year and is entering its final stage, which will fully integrate a system of RFID technology, staff identification and security gates.
The Melbourne City Council determined that a manual process of logging the travels and locations of city vehicles was both unreliable and inefficient. The council worked with Gamma Solutions, who had previously supplied the city’s parking inspectors with Intermec portable label printers, to create an automated logging system.
The system utilizes a series of Intermec IF5 fixed RFID readers to log each vehicle entering and departing the city’s parking lot, and collects the data into daily databases. Officials say the system has provided a clear return on the investment, saving time and improving worker efficiency.
